Thinking of modifying my rx-7 (90 turbo 2) when i get one. Will probably start with suspension, strut braces and new tyres, then exhaust, what are the consequences of adding a more free flowing exhaust with Cat still on (don't want massive noise). Will it breath better, or will it free up too much pressure off the engine (assuming that is possible)

Now to intake/fuel - erm.... am i right in thinking that if you go too much either way, pre-detonation happens (which is bad right)? so if i add a HKS intake kit will i need to upgrade more than tweaking the timing, or will it be ok w/out adjusting the timing. How do you adjust the timing?

Turbo: How much boost can you get from the stock one? And how? And if i get loads of boost i will need more fuel right? How do i get more fuel, bigger injectors? and how big do the injectors need to be to need a bigger fuel pump.

Oh and I think i'll put better plug and HT leads too, can the coil packs be upgraqded? and why would u do that?

And bearing in mind the above plans, will i need to do something to the ECU? If so how, cheaply?

Your input is helpful to me!

Thanks

1) it will breathe better with a catback system, and sound alot better with a cat still on. No such thing as too little backpressure,

2)detonation is bad, yes. You will not need to tweak the timing with an intake or exhaust. You adjust the CAS by unscrewing a screw and rotating it while watching the timing marks on the eccentric(main) pulley.

3) You can get about 14psi from the stock unit, all you have to do is open up the exhaust/intake. You need more fuel past 11psi. And the stock intercooler is maxing out past 12psi. You can get a bigger fuel pump and injectors, if you do get bigger injectors you will need a piggy back comp or a standalone ems to control them. Get a bigger fuel pump right away, don't even wait till the injectors are too big.

4) you can upgrade the coil packs to like msd blaster coil or something but you don't need to unless you go beyond 400hp or like 17psi on most big turbos, or until you get inj breakup. Most people run either the HKS twinpower or an MSD setup when they start to play. Only use NGK plugs.

5) piggybacks range from 400+ standalones 1200+

If I were you I wouldn't even waste my time with a piggyback, just save up and buy a standalone. You're going to get to your limit pretty quick with a piggy back. But the S-afc seems very popular you could get a lot of support if you get one.

Well the thing I don't like about either one is you don't get a new wiring harness, you are still using 15+ old wiring, thats why i opted for the haltech, and you can only run up to like 1200cc inj on the PFC

thanks for the input guys, personally, i would go for a standalone too. But I've got a long way to go before I get one of them, think i'll stick to a better cat exhaust and decent suspension first.

I will keep an eye on this too. If I win some cash on the lottery I will turn my rx-7 into a porsche ravaging monster. Hehe

No no no... you can go up to 1500 cc's with the commander and if you get the datalogit you can run any size injector you want.. Ie. I have 1680cc injector and I can put 1680 in my map no problem..
