Well, thanks for all the great advice, but I guess I won't be joining the ranks of RX7 owners because I DON'T FIT. I really liked the car, it was in good shape, good looking, engine sounded healthy, etc. Then I put the top up and realized that my head was banging on it, even with the seat all the way tilted back. Jeez, I'm only 6'2"! Oh well, guess I'll be stuck with something like a Celica, BMW or Saab convertible. Blech.

When I first got a convertible it felt pretty tight inside. I think that the roof is lower than that in a coupe.
I can sit up pretty straight in my TII and there aren't too many clearance problems... Wish I had a little more leg room though, I think I'll start another string about what kind of seats everybody likes.

If that is the only reason I would look into having the seat reworked to sit a little lower, there is not a better car than an RX......
Yes, I do have fairly short legs and a long torso (6'2" height, 32" inseam pants, 235lb, eye color . . . ) but I don't think that was all of the problem. Now that I've thought about it and heard that people bigger than me fit, I remembered that when I sat in it the guy had sheepskin seatcovers on, which probably added at least an inch and maybe more to the height of the driver's seat. Duh, can't believe I didn't think of it at the time. I called back, but unfortunately the car's been sold in the interim.

Well, I'll probably be staying somewhat within the "family," because I'm supposed to hear back tonight on a silver '91 miata with 50k miles. Headroom in that was just adequate -- about an inch or an inch and a half between my head and the convertible top crossbar. Any advice on how to drop a seat an inch or two would be most appreciated. One guy on miata.net cut some of the padding out of the seat cushion, but that strikes me as a less-than-optimal solution.

Wow you were short on headroom in the RX-7, but not the Miata? That's odd, first time I drove in a Miata I felt like a giant.

If you take the seat out you can probably just make the brackets sit lower inside the car, but that may require some welding, depending on the setup.
