With my experience in this...its normally been the case that you'll need the same year tranny as you will motor...but I'm sure you can make the 88 T2 tranny bolt up, I just swapped out because the NA tranny I had was only good for about 250HP...which my T2 will be pushing more then that! I will put the link up to my new page shortly...it should answer many of your questions....

BTW...no, I didn't get any goodies w/ mine, lol. However, I did get a burnt up clutch, and a nasty intercooler....The clutch I have already taken care of thanks to the guys at centerforce, but the intercooler is staying until I can get more $$$ for a front mount....

The 87-88 tranny has slightly better gear ratios than the 89-92, but the 89-92 engine produces more hp. I would like to put a 89-92 engine on a 87-88 tranny.
This is for 1988......
Drivetrain Specifications:
5-Speed TurboII Ratio
1st
3.843
2nd
2.015
3rd
1.391
4th
1.000
5th
0.762
Reverse
3.288
Final Drive
4.100
This is for 1990............

**** now that I look at it the only diff. is with 5th gear, and not by much. I guess I'll just go with all 89-92 ****.

My shipping cost was about $195 from CA to VA, and that was for both the motor and tranny. I can't exactly say how long it took...its still not done yet, lol. I've gotta finish my exhaust, dash harness, MAF, fuel pump...and a few little hoses...then I should be able to start it. I started this back in the first week of October, and I'm about 5 days away from turn key driving again! There have been many snags in my process...with finding parts and affording them, lol. If you have the right tools, the right time, and the right parts...it can be done in a weekend.

Dash Harness Well, those of you going from 88 and older to an 89+ T2 will need a 89+ Dash harness. The 88- one won't plug into the 89 T2 ECU. The dash harness doesn't have to be turbo. Cost is about $100
Throttle cable Well, like me, many of you will go with a J-Spec motor. The problem is Japanese cars have the throttle exit on the right side of the car, thus the throttle mounts to the right. On A-spec motors, the throttle mounts to the left. You can bring the cable around the front of the motor and mount a bracket that will allow the cable to connect to the right side of the TB. Cost is about $5
Ok, will i need the dash harness from a T2 if i get a haltech?
And whats up w/ the throttle body thing im confused
