would it be better to take off the brace that is bolted up between the frame that kind of goes under the starter?

Yeah, removing that will give you ALOT more room to work with. I like to remove it when taking out the starter.

oh i tried pushing it and pulling it. i think pulling was the best way but after i got it up to about 25 i passed out due to the heat index being about 115, mom was real scared so she got out of the car and came to see if i was alright. she took me to the hospital and they hooked me up with some good perscriptions. i guess it was worth it even though i didnt get enough speed to start it.

It's just 4 14 mm bolts. They may be tough to get out if they've never been removed before.

this is crap. i took the thing to get it tested and it worked. my dad and i werent thinking so we didnt think hey its working with the old solenoid, so we bought a new solenoid put it on there and then put the piece of crap back on the car. well i got it all hooked and everything and tried to start it and it didnt work. everything was hooked up right and everything. The starter actually is smoking out of a little white plastic thing that is right by the wire from the solenoid. we tried to hook it up directly to the battery and that didnt work either. it worked at auto zone why not on the car??/ please help it sucks to get a ride from your mom everywhere. i feel like bigtime.

Well... if it works at the parts store then it should work at home... are u SURE that the electrics are fine? try hooking up the starter w/o having it bolted in place and crank the engine.... make sure u have a really solid earth. are u sure u know how to correctly hook it up? That smoking doesn't sound too good... that's probably your problem.

Maybe try buyin a used starter.... they're not that expensive

well that only leaves checking eng. to see if it rotates, battery cables and battery. you said it clicked so i assume neutral safety switch is working.

Shane.Trammell 07-24-2002 06:34 AM

I know how to hook it up. I hooked it up the same way i that i took it off. The Wire that goes to the starter from the solenoid is on the left, the one from the battery is on the right. The positive is kind of hard to mess up. Im gonna take it off again today and see if i can get it checked again. Then i might go to the mazda dealer and see if they can tell me anything. They prob wont bc the only person you can talk to there is the guy behind the desk. They wont let you talk to the mechanics.
