How Do I Read Dtc's Off The S4 Fc

How do you read codes off s4 fc's i know you need a tester and you read them off the green testing plug, but where can i get the tester or can i make one? whats the deal? and how do i know i have codes? are the fc's obd1? somebody set me straight
