Is it getting hot from the sun or from the engine heat?

as he said, even at night, I have the same problem, I can feel the heat radiating from the firewall on my legs sometimes.

The tranny's do get hot. I wonder what the spray in foam/insulation would do. You could spray it down before you put the carpet in, maybe half an inch thick or something.

The heat shielding that mazda puts there leaves much to be disired. There are these foil sheets you can get from JC Whitney that work just fine. If it can block the heat of an AC VW engine it'll take care of the tranny

lets see, i can feel the heat coming up through my shift boot, through my shift rod, i can feel it on the firewall by my legs sometimes, and the carpet around the tranny area is warm, british victoria sells insulation for the rx7 you can put under you carpet. its suppose to work i guess? later
