If you want a turbo just get a Turbo II. Don't turbo a GTU.

compressions:

s4 TII 8.5

s5 TII 9.0

s4 N/A 9.4

s5 N/A 9.7

GTU is supposed to be lighter. also it comes with some body styling differences. get the TII...

plus different designs in manifolds

also the s5 rotors are around 9.5 pounds where the s4 rotors are in the 11 pound range. now as far as the gtu body is concerned there was no change, the gtus now that had an aluminum hood and a few other light weight things as well as what im told a compleat t2 driveline with an na motor and t2 suspention and breaks. but then again the gxl had them breaks aswell. like i said before dont molest a gtus man.

The S5 GTU is the base model Fc for 89-91. The 88GTU Was the sportiest NA in the S4(86-88) and has the factory body kit shared with the 88 T2 as with the wing, 4 wheel disk brakes with the turbo front brakes(larger), stiffer suspension, and is the second lightest FC, the lightest being the sport that does not have a sunroof. The 88GTU also has the turbo seats, sunroof, AC, PS, but does not have power windows or a rear hatch wiper.

As I said earlier the S5 GTU is the base. But the GTUs(note the small s)model is comparable to the 88GTU with some differences. Such as heavier wieght and a slightly softer suspension that the S5s had. THe biggest difference is what would have been done. The GTUs was supposed to have a 20b NA but the plans were nixed due to insurance, fuel consumption, and other things.

in another post someone asked if their t2 would run ok without the turbo, and was told not really because the compression was too low (except KompressorLOgic says its the same)? im guessing that mazda messed with compression (not to mention the ecu) just to put turbos on?

If you check the compression numbers on other engines (you know, those funny piston engines) you'll find that turbo'd engines typically run lower compression ratios than normally aspirated engines. Not to worry, the turbo will more than make up for it! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif

hmmm.....yeah i'm contemplating on which one to get....so if i put on a bolt on turbo on a GTU will that be worth it?

theres no bolt up turbo kit. what would it be worth???

high compression + rotary turbo + inexperienced with RX7's = blown motor & empty pocket...

get the TII...

no i didnt say they are the same,

the compression ratio is different between NA and Turbo, but its not that much lower it will still run pretty well u might lose like 10-15 hp but thats it....

ohh i have ran an na-turbo setup before it works well and is alot of fun, but generally speaking its cheaper and a better idea to get a real t2 motor.

I have both, an 87 T2 and an 88' GTU w/S5 swap.

I can say I like my T2 alot more mainly because of the power. If you are wanting just a nice car to drive I say go for the GTU. You will prob have less money in it than you will a T2.

My GTU w/just a few minor things like intake and full exhaust runs exceptionally well.

Really there are turbo rx-7's and non turbo rx-7's. Everything else is trim packages. (within each series)
