whats up with my car? every time i shift into 3rd the ****** grinds or like catches a little bit. i think the synchros mayb e going out. anybody have any idea what it cost to get the tranny rebuilt. or should i just put in a turbo ll tranny? i hear there a lot stronger and already know what i need to do the conversion. flywheel,starter,etc............ the tranny also does not want to go into second gear willingly until it warms up a lil bit and its also starting to catch when i shift into second gear too. since ive owned the car the last 4 months its overheated, been rear ended, and now ******* tranny problems, the car onl has 70,000 miles ,its a 88 GXL, i think im gonna get my money back on the ******* bitch? and go back to pistons........................................... ..piece

waste ricers,all of them!!!!!!! h34r:

yea its almost definitely the synchros. you might want to fix up the bushings too, that should help your third gear problem 100%. its a common problem on 2nd gens, mostly cuz all 2nd Gens are at least 10years old =T. but you got a good one with great mileage!

sorry i dunno how much it would be to fix it.

going back to pistons? BLASPHEMY! they'll never match the smoothness of a rotory, and the way rotories thrive in high rpm. B)

Most likely the synchros, very common on these cars from all I've heard.

A few things you can do to try to postphone the inevitable is switch to a sythetic gear oil (Redline, Hyrdrashift (do they make that anymore?)) or try some of the various addatives out there.

But it's only a stopgap.

As foopy says, new bushings can help the issue, but it's a stopgap.

I'm in the same boat, my tranny is pretty worn but I'm going to swap with my other 7 if needed.

As far as rebuilt tranny's, get refrences. Getting a GOOD one is a bit of a pain at times in my experience.

Look for used ones as well, can get those cheapo.

Dunno what it will cost you to have it rebuilt. When the time comes I'll be doing my own rebuild...well maybe if I can borrow some of the tools. *sighs* Bad thing about not being in CA with some of my friends. Pretty much the cost of gears, synchros, bushings and a few other odds and ends plus my time and a BUNCH of scraped up hands and fingers.

The transmission had none of these problems when you test drove it 4 months ago? It is a 14 year old car, its only going to take so much abuse before things break. Guy probably sold it at the right time, might have had a bunch of probelms himself and figured the time had come to pass it on.
