why do people keep saying different things as to what octane gasoline you should use in the car (for the record, i am talking about the turbo engine). Some people say 87, some say 93, wtf.

I have never heard a sane person suggest anything but premium gas in the turbo. I would never run anything less than 93.

Detonation in a turbo under boost will likely destroy your engine. Higher octane gasolines are less prone to detonate. End of story.

Yeah, I had to run out to the car and check the manual. It does say "at least 87 octane" or something like that. Remember, that's for a new car with all systems in new condition.

For me, it's a simple matter of risk versus reward. The risk is a blown engine. The reward is saving 15 cents a gallon. You decide. If you daily drive the car and don't dog it, you'll probably be fine.

On a side note, my DD is a Volvo 940 Turbo. I usually run regular. Volvo "recommends" premium. I goosed it a little getting onto the interstate last night, and she started rattling pretty good. Guess I better start running midgrade.

If it's not detonating, you're ok - I'm pretty sure they all have the same calorific value - don't know where I heard that though.

In general you should run the lowest octane that keeps you from pinging. If you have no detonation with 87 then run 87 anything more will cause excess carbon buildup. I run 87 on my Ducati motorcycle and it runs great with it.

This is true, but I think it bears mentioning that while in a piston engine, you can get out of the throttle when you hear pinging and not do any damage, often with a turbo rotary, the damage is already done.
