The Gas Debate
#2
I have never heard a sane person suggest anything but premium gas in the turbo. I would never run anything less than 93.
Detonation in a turbo under boost will likely destroy your engine. Higher octane gasolines are less prone to detonate. End of story.

you can use 87 in a STOCK turbo 2, but its still not a great idea

Yeah, I had to run out to the car and check the manual. It does say "at least 87 octane" or something like that. Remember, that's for a new car with all systems in new condition.
For me, it's a simple matter of risk versus reward. The risk is a blown engine. The reward is saving 15 cents a gallon. You decide. If you daily drive the car and don't dog it, you'll probably be fine.
On a side note, my DD is a Volvo 940 Turbo. I usually run regular. Volvo "recommends" premium. I goosed it a little getting onto the interstate last night, and she started rattling pretty good. Guess I better start running midgrade.

[quote name='Ghiadesigns' date='Apr 13 2005, 09:49 AM']In general you should run the lowest octane that keeps you from pinging. If you have no detonation with 87 then run 87 anything more will cause excess carbon buildup. I run 87 on my Ducati motorcycle and it runs great with it.

This is true, but I think it bears mentioning that while in a piston engine, you can get out of the throttle when you hear pinging and not do any damage, often with a turbo rotary, the damage is already done.
