Finally FC For Me
Hello everyone,
I was out yesterday looking at an 89 gxl. The car has a great body with 190K miles and interior was good. The engine was rebuilt, ported, and has widened water channels. Intake has been replaced and has a "jacob's ignition computer", and also a high flow cat. Also is supposed to have a new tranny with 20k miles
The Bad
The car has been sitting for a few months
One tire was flat and was left sitting, side wall is cracked, needs replacement
It has a auto tranny and supposedly slips in reverse
and lastly, after we jump started the car< took a while cause of old gas, it ran fine for a while, but then the fuel pulsation dampener crapped out and we had to shut it down
.
I didn't get to drive it cause of the tire and the fpd but it seemed good.
I wanted to know where can I buy a new or aftermarket fpd, about how much they cost, and how long does it take to change one? I'm a fairly competent tech and my brother is better than me. I need to know to decide if I need to tow it home when I buy it or change it on the spot and drive it.
Also anyone have experience with auto tranny's? I was going to just change the fluid and the filter and see if that solved it.
Thanks for any help provided.
Any tuners in MD or VA that want to help me out, I'm probably going back for it on saturday.

I was searching on the forum and some vendor sites, and the only thing I could find as far as the part was for a damper attached to the fuel rail for $200-250. Is the rail and damper one peice on the 89-91, or can they be seperated? Anyone have one they are trying to sell?
Thanks for the info.
Any quotes on how much time it takes replacing it? Just want to know if it's something that I can do quick enough to be able to drive it home instead of towing it home.
If it's towed I have to go about 50 miles, since its an auto I should probably have it off of all four wheels, right?

I'm moving this to the 2nd gen section, you should get more answers there.
I wouldn't try replacing it on the spot, unless you can come back to it if you don't finish.
Changing the FPD requires removing the intake manifold. If there are dried, brittle oil metering lines, they make break, and you'd have to address those before driving it. You'd also need gaskets for the intake manifolds, in case the ones on there rip apart while removing the manifold. If the vacuum lines are also dried/brittle, those would require replacement as well, as they would most likely break while removing them.
I'd rather tow just to be safe. Can't they lift it from the back wheels? Just make sure the steering wheel is locked straight.
I hope you're getting a good price on this! It sounds like it'll be a good car once you address those problems.

Thanks for the help. I'm getting a good price. He was asking $1250 and I'm going to use this to talk him down a few hundred.
I think I'm just going to go to uhaul and rent a truck and 4wheel dolly shouldn't be more than $100.
I think it will be a good replacement for the MR2 and a great car just wish it were a five speed but I can just put one of those in later
http://www.mazdatrix.com/c-pulsation.htm kinda spendy though
http://www.mazdatrix.com/c-pulsation.htm <- this guy used to have a bunch of fuel rails with a "banjo bolt" (mod explained below) that he was selling for about $80 a piece. he got rid of his parts, but the link is to his page that has ANOTHER link to the guy he sold all of em to (in new york?) but yeah.
heres the banjo bolt deelie -> http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/2ndgen/t...n_dampener.html
I know it says 84-88 but I'm hoping its not much different on the 89's (I just bought my first S5 yesterday, it hasnt been delivered yet)
good luck man, and take care of your new baby!
