I thought the purpose of the TID, panel filter, air box, air tube, and rad panels was to prevent you from blowing up your engine.

How does the TID prevent you from blowing your engine? Is that why aftermarket part manufacturers don't make an intake kit for the second gen. Turbo? Hmmm... maybe id be better off just getting a K&N replacement filter for my TII then putting a K&N universal filter. I just don't want to take any chances with my baby.

stock intake keeps the boost down and thus the apex seals in the engine

Oh... so what are the chances that you would blow your engine from adding an intake? Does anyone know why no one makes a intake kit for 2G turbos? And also, If i do go with the Universal K&N filter for my 87 tII do i really need a heat shield? I was going to order one from Vinspeed but i don't want to if its not worth it. would it do any harmful damage to the engine if you didn't use a heatshield?

What's unharmful damage?

I think it's silly to run w/o a heatshield. You guys all know how hot it gets under there. And yes anything will heat soak if it sits long enough.
