Got the car back today, I can tell you I feel no difference in power with the high-flow converter on in place of the pre-silencer ( which is a good thing of course) the tone of the exaust is much better when it revs up now, its deeper and not as annoying as it was before. I still wish it was a bit quiter, but im happy with the tone of the exaust when Im driving, which was my main goal. And now its all stainless steel, mufflers and all. The only thing left is the small piece of pipe that is before the converter, which is aluminized anyhow and in preety good shape from when it was made almost 5 years ago by the same shop. It was already off the lift so I couldnt snap a pic on it, but I tried to crawl under and get one, but I dont think it will show up that good. Ill snap a much better pic when I put it on my friends lift next week sometime.

I thought you had replaced the pre-converters and main converter with a down-pipe and pre-silencer 5 years ago. If so what is that pre-converter? Or you just call the down-pipe this way because it's placed before the converter?

< Yes, I called it that becuase its a piece of pipe before the converter, I guess you could call it a downpipe.

Is it a 2.5 inch down-pipe? I think you wanted replace it with 3" pipe in stainless, no? I'm in the way of doing that, I'm just waiting for money before starting. I don't like the smell since I removed the converter. BTW, what about the new smell, is it ok now? ???

I didnt go with a 3", one was a concern for back-pressure, another reason was the fact that the car is stock and I wanted to quiet it up a bit anyhow. So its 2.5 inch, which it was before anyhow, only now that rusty shitty pre-silencer is off the car. It was windy as all hell today, but when I got home, and in front of the shop for that matter, I stood behind the car, and even placed my nose close to the exaust, and the only thing I could smell was the smell of new exaust, and even after getting on it a bit on the way home from the shop to see if I could feel the difference, the only thing I could smell was the ever so faint smell of the converter, where as before my eyes would tear. Times are getting hard in New York to pass emissions, they are run on a wheel dyno now, with the car being stock, I figured why should I use up favors to pass a simple emissions test?? The true test will be now if it passes emissions on its own when I get it inspected in the next few days. Then I have the best of everything, the performance is as good as the pre-silencer, the tone is deeper and not as annoying at higher rpms as it was, with the windows up the cabin noise is less ( with the top down its almost a non-factor ), and if it passes emissions Ill be very happy. Not to mention now my clothes and hair wont stink like a rotory after driving with the top down. I would reccomend 100% that this is the way to go if you are looking for a performance exaust, you could even go with a BONEZ which I believe is a bolt on system with a converter? And you would still be emissions legal. A few years ago I didnt care, maybe im getting softer in my old age?

yeah, I don't like loud cars anymore either (for street cars I mean) but I like to hear a nice engine sound while driving. So let me know how it passed the emission test when done, I'm most interested. Is it also a visual test?

I have almost the same setup as you (2.5 downpipe to highflow cat to a catback) and passed jersey emmissions. Jersey emmissions are one of the hardest to pass and all my readings were 0's. The cat does a damn good job. Plus I had replaced my O2 sensor before that so pretty much all my emmissions crap was new. You shouldn't have a problem, and as for the visual most inspection guys won't know that you are supposed to have 3 damn cats on there anyway. They will see the cat and pass it. I am not sure if NY has a visual but Jersey does. (good thing I did my own inspections )

New York does have a visual, the inspections is $35 here, and its supposed to take almost a 1/2 hour, and there is a video camera thats hooked up to Albany that is watching the inspection bay. They do the visual, then strap it down and run it at various speeds on a wheel dyno with a probe in the exaust. Usually if you know the shop and your car isnt a piece of ****, they just do the emmision test on the dyno. For the last few years, at first he would run another car on the dyno, then last year he ran mine, did some funky **** with the connector, like he would keep un-plugging it and plugging it back in at different times ( he had someone doing the unplugging when he would honk the horn while running the car on the dyno ), and it passed. This year I hope that the car passes on its own. I also dont think anyone has a clue its supposed to have 3 converters, maybe in California its much harder.
