hey all,

i have an 88 SE. everytime i start it up it idles back and forth from about 700rpm-1100rpm. this is during open and closed loop mode (doesn't matter which). the droning doesn't really cause any driveability issues...but i'd like my car to sound a little healthier.

thanks for any insight..

Hey smart one. Ive got about 199 of 200 posts asking questions to fix things.

And I would recommend you start with your Throttle body, tear the son of a bitch out, look it over, clean it, white lithium grease the springs and **** on the side.

Spray WD40 inside on the butterflies clean them really good. Check the fast idle cam, remove it if you've done the TB mod.

Look around under the manifold, look for shitty vaccum lines that are brittle and falling apart, replace them. Take your BAC out, clean it, put it back on.

Unplug your TPS, start your car, wait, see how it idles. Clean the connection pins in your TPS.

Check that massive tube going from your intake into the BAC for leaks, check all clamps make sure they arent messed up or slipping.

Check everything.

I fixed all my problems today; by checking and rechecking and rechecking everything....and ive got a ******* turbo system to deal with. NA whiner...

id start at the TPS, while its idling like you describe (revving up and ****), unplug the TPS, if it smoothes out, readjust your TPS, if even after adjustment it still does it then you need a new one.

this is my current problem with my 88 n/a, im just too lazy to throw a brand new tps on a $500 car when i got my t2 waiting for more go-fast-goodies.

kevin.

I have the same stupid problem. Except mines from 1000 to 1500. But ive checked my tps with a mulitmeter and led tester. I'm thinking its completely a vac leak. and for my case it a big vac leak. Idk. my engine is a 1990 s5 so if u got any insight it would be nice.

I know that when i tightened the thermowax screw it raised the idle but also lowered the loop. so instead of 1000 to 1500, its not going 1300 to 1500.

i have a similar problem whith my idle speed, but the difference is that sometimes my car idle between 1000-1500 rpm and sometimes between 2200 - 2700...

the first time that i had the problem was about a week ago, in the morning (the temperature should has been near 3ēc)... i started the car, whait a moment to warm it up, and start driving... 5 minutes later the problem starts...

if i shift a few times near the redline, the problem stop for 2-3 minutes...

what can i do?

by the way, my engine is a 91 s5, with 60.000 miles...

Yours sounds like your TB isnt closing all the way everytime you let off. I definately could be wrong, but i am not sure what else would cause the idle speed to be different every time. I would check your TB and if its not that check all the things mentioned above.
