86 NA Auto trany starting to vibrate and it seems to be the U joints. Local shop is going to cut the ends off the shaft and weld on new U joints that will be replacable.

Is $ 300 a good deal.

Will they need two ballance the shaft? I think the factiry does when the car is new...

Many Thanks,

Critter

What steps did you go through to determine this is the problem? I have an 86 GXL auto and I have a vibration that feels like the tranny around 30mph but it goes away at higher speeds.

mazdatrix.com has aftermarket driveshafts with all new parts and replaceable u-joints for your 86 NA for $242. they aren't that hard to replace, just like 4 bolts on each side of the shaft, and it shouldn't be that much to have it balanced at a shop. personally, i'd do it myself and have it balanced somewhere.

I looked at the u joints my self and they looked good 2 me, but the problem got worse and I took it to a trany shop i've used before. We put it on the lift so the wheels could spin and started it, put it in gear and ran it up to 30 MPH. The tech at the shop said from below it was obviuos that it was the u joints causing the vibs. I drove it for one more day and it was getting rappidly worse until tonight when I dropped it off and it was almost undrivable... I hope this works.
