Just pulled the clutch on our 1988 turbo II. we're pretty sure that the clutch that was in it wasn't meant for it (maybe it's a non-turbo clutch). the friction plate snapped between the friction surface and the sprung-center section. pics are here:

wondering if it is even possible to put the non-turbo clutch in the turbo (which we think is what happened). the pressure plate looks good, as does the throw out bearing and flywheel. we're looking at just grabbing another friction plate and going on our merry way.

so the question is (if it was the wrong clutch) can we use the old pressure plate and throw out bearing with a new turbo II friction plate or do we need to spring for a whole new clutch assembly.

also

are there any physical differences between the non-turbo and turbo clutch that we would be able to tell if it is a turbo II pressure plate or not? who knows, it might have even been for a different year RX-7.

thanks.

http://mazdatrix.com/f86-92tb.htm They've got some good info on clutches.

I've never messed with NA stuff much so I don't know if the splines are different in addition to the smaller diameter.

I've never seen a disc come apart like that. Hmm, I wonder if it was a 225mm and your flywheel is 240mm that it would be unsupported in part around the center and break like that from the bending in that spot.

I'm gonna go out and see if an NA disc will fit on a TII tranny shaft and report back.

Well, that theory is out. Different size shaft. Learn something new every day.

I'm curious as to what caused it to break like that.

i honestly think it was just a cheap clutch. the guy we bought the car off of definately pulled a fast one on us. i should have had a clue when there were no bushings around the shifter.

when i took the tranny off two of the bolts holding the bell housing to the block were loose and two were missing. the long bolt that goes through the starter and block was also loose. i'm pretty sure those didn't help the situation any.

the steel that broke along the clutch like that was really thin. i wouldn't expect a clutch in a turbo car to have stress points like that be so thin. then again it doesn't look much better in the pictures they've got on mazdatrix. i guess we'll find out when we order it. also i'm used to clutches on an AWD turbo. which is a completely different kind of animal.

btw - anyone have part numbers or specifications for the bellhousing bolt set? if not anyone know where i can find it?

thanks a bunch.

not sure if it's up anymore... but www.iluvmyrx7.com had the parts fiche on it a while back... that should get you the part #'s you need.

There's another source for the fiche. You'll get part #s, but they don't go as far as giving the dimensions of bolts and stuff which would be damn handy.

I'm getting quite a bucket of nuts and bolts from all the 7s I've messed with and parted. They need to be sorted, but the prospect is just too daunting. Someday........ I'll have a bin I can go to and grab a 10 x 1.25 x 60 or whatever.

Well if you say that some of the bellhousing to engine bolts were loose it is possible that the trans was at a slight angle to the engine and this was causing the flex between the clutch hub and the friction surface.

Just like bending a piece of metal back anf forth until ti breaks. I would replace the pilot bearing and check the input shaft for uneven wear and check the runout to ensure it is not bent.
