you really cant do that job yourself, DO NOT buy the top and take it somewhere.

With the discount the shops get on the top they can sell you the top installed for about $800 or so. It is not a easy job even for them.

My local guy gets $800 installed, the top was going to cost me about $650 for a Robbins brand top. It took him almost a day to do, he asked me for a $350 deposit which tells me thats what he must pay for the top itself.

Yeah i was just using Victoria British as a referance i guess i should have mentioned in my post its not a job that can be done at home.

There has to be a ton of shops that do tops out there?

It have the canvas top or the cloth?

Is the canvas top the one that looks more rubbery? Well thats the kind it has.. Maybe Next weekend I will drive over and take pictures, start it up and check behind the seats for traces of water damage.. and probably test the compression..

You said a mercedes style top, they do sell a cloth top that is considered

a upgrade and is more money, I was going to say if its not leaking and not ripped to keep that cloth top

Overall, the top looks okay, it just has a couple of small spots where it needs some attention, but i guess a shop that works on convertible tops might be able to address those quite nicely..

does the top match the targa piece?? if there is water behind the seats after it rains it just means that the drain tubes that hook up to the pouches in the sides of the top are clogged. those are easy to fix. this does sound like a good deal though

clogged drains? we should be so lucky!

I flush mine out everytime I wash the car, its not clogged drains, its water coming in the door jamb where the door meets the bottom of the window.

It is a good price considering my other 88 vert is going up for sale asking price of $5700.

Yeah the top matches, the targa piece... I definately like the way the car looks, so all I need to do now is make sure the engine is good..

OK, It has been cold out here but no rain since last weekend.. so can I just hose it down and and check for leaks that way?

Seppuku 03-23-2003 03:37 PM

yeah you can do it that way but the conditions are different between that and actual rain.

Rob x-7 03-23-2003 03:38 PM

only the obvious ones, like you might get some leaking in under the back window, or some leaking in on the drivers seat, I think those in warmer climates might leak less due to the rubber not contracting and expanding like it does here, especially when it gets freezing out and the water freezes.

You really need a good rain to see if it leaks, even if it does, dont worry about it, these cars leaked when they were brand new. Its a convertible not a submarine!
