OK, fellas.. I found a vert out here at a used car dealer.. The guy is having the typical problems like flooding cuz his mechanic turns the car on to move it and then just shuts it off.. Anyways.. I am goona work on the car and give it a good look over.. He is asking $2800 for it.. it is a White 89 Vert.. in good shape.. But I noticed the top(mercedes style) has a couple worn spots and I was wondering if I can buy a new one and how much? He said if I fix the car he will sell it to me for less than $2800.. maybe $2500 cuz he needs the space.. so is it worth $2500 if the engine is healthy.. It is in overall good shape..

Seppuku 03-23-2003 01:24 AM

Id guess a top is about 800 but im not sure

Seppuku 03-23-2003 01:26 AM

Victoria british wants 299 fir the front and 399 rear

75 Repu 03-23-2003 02:01 AM

Thanx Seppuku

So you thonk $2500 is a good price if the car is in good running condition?

Seppuku 03-23-2003 02:04 AM

yeah if everything is good that sounds like a great price i paid 4000 for my 88 vert.

75 Repu 03-23-2003 02:26 AM

Thanx Seppuku..

Apex13B 03-23-2003 12:19 PM

WOW 2500 is a good price for a vert...paid $3200 for mine with 80,000 miles on it, verts seem to fetch the same price as s5 t2's. I guess because of their uniqueness https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png . Once you put the top down you wont want anything else! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683827.gif

you really cant do that job yourself, DO NOT buy the top and take it somewhere.

With the discount the shops get on the top they can sell you the top installed for about $800 or so. It is not a easy job even for them.

My local guy gets $800 installed, the top was going to cost me about $650 for a Robbins brand top. It took him almost a day to do, he asked me for a $350 deposit which tells me thats what he must pay for the top itself.

75 Repu 03-23-2003 02:39 PM

yeah.. The cool part is that he will let me work on the car to get it running properly so if I see that the engine is in good shape then I will definately buy it.. but if not he will pay me for the work.. This will be a nice Daily driver if I get it..

Thanx for the info rob.. The only problem would be to find a place out here on the west coast to do it for me..

At least the interior doesn't smell bad, so it musn't be leaking..

Yeah i was just using Victoria British as a referance i guess i should have mentioned in my post its not a job that can be done at home.

Rob x-7 03-23-2003 02:43 PM

check behind the seats after a rainy day.

There has to be a ton of shops that do tops out there?

It have the canvas top or the cloth?

Is the canvas top the one that looks more rubbery? Well thats the kind it has.. Maybe Next weekend I will drive over and take pictures, start it up and check behind the seats for traces of water damage.. and probably test the compression..

Rob x-7 03-23-2003 03:10 PM

You said a mercedes style top, they do sell a cloth top that is considered

a upgrade and is more money, I was going to say if its not leaking and not ripped to keep that cloth top

75 Repu 03-23-2003 03:16 PM

Overall, the top looks okay, it just has a couple of small spots where it needs some attention, but i guess a shop that works on convertible tops might be able to address those quite nicely..

Shane.Trammell 03-23-2003 03:28 PM

does the top match the targa piece?? if there is water behind the seats after it rains it just means that the drain tubes that hook up to the pouches in the sides of the top are clogged. those are easy to fix. this does sound like a good deal though

Rob x-7 03-23-2003 03:31 PM

clogged drains? we should be so lucky!

I flush mine out everytime I wash the car, its not clogged drains, its water coming in the door jamb where the door meets the bottom of the window.

It is a good price considering my other 88 vert is going up for sale asking price of $5700.

75 Repu 03-23-2003 03:35 PM

Yeah the top matches, the targa piece... I definately like the way the car looks, so all I need to do now is make sure the engine is good..

OK, It has been cold out here but no rain since last weekend.. so can I just hose it down and and check for leaks that way?

Seppuku 03-23-2003 03:37 PM

yeah you can do it that way but the conditions are different between that and actual rain.

Rob x-7 03-23-2003 03:38 PM

only the obvious ones, like you might get some leaking in under the back window, or some leaking in on the drivers seat, I think those in warmer climates might leak less due to the rubber not contracting and expanding like it does here, especially when it gets freezing out and the water freezes.

You really need a good rain to see if it leaks, even if it does, dont worry about it, these cars leaked when they were brand new. Its a convertible not a submarine!

Seppuku 03-23-2003 03:44 PM

Mine doesnt leak anymore!

75 Repu 03-23-2003 03:46 PM

So are the leaks hard to fix?

Rob x-7 03-23-2003 03:48 PM

I actually never bothered, I dont drive the car in the rain or in the winter no more. Im sure they can be slowed or stopped with enough work.

Again, those that stayed in warmer climates leak less.

Shane.Trammell 03-23-2003 03:48 PM

mine leaks, right on my leg when it rains, its soo annoying

LMFAO,....I havent driven my car in four years, but the minute I read that, my thigh tingeled right where the ****** top used to drip.

on your thigh or foot?

If its on your thigh, roll the window down a bit, then roll it up and push out on the window a little as you do this, it usually seats the window better against the molding. You can do that when you get out of the car as well, you just have to lean in on the passenger side and do it.

If its your foot its the windshild leaking, I found this out after I had a new windshield put in and low and behold it now leaks right on to my ******* left foot, I have to bring it in and let them put a new one in one of these days.

Shane.Trammell 03-23-2003 03:55 PM

haha you know they use that as torture in china right??

In my case the leak wasnt hard to fix just requirded removing the door panel and fixing somethings and a new outer window seal. Pretty much once you trace the leak back to its origin and replace/fix the proper seals your good to go. If you do have a leak youll notice discoloration in the carpeting behind the seats as thats where most the water runs.

Are there any companies that make rollbars for the Vert?

75 Repu 03-23-2003 04:25 PM

ok cool, that was one of my main concerns with the top on the Vert.. So the only other lil problem it had was the material rolled up like 1/2 inch above the rear window..
