Is it possible to do a compression test w/ and engine not install? like if i hookup the starter somehow and cranked it, could i test the compression then?

You could check the condition of the apex seals by removing the exhaust manifold and turning the engine by hand. Just use a wrench and turn it by the front pulley bolt. I think you could also use an impact wrench to turn the motor over via the front pulley bolt. This way you could hook up the compression tester and turn the engine quickly with the air wrench. Are you going to rebuild the engine or just check it and slap it in? While you have it out you might as well upgrade the thermal bypass thermostat with and Atkins pellet or just modify it yourself.

Me and a buddy of mine just pulled his engine out of his FD. We turned the flywheel to the right and listened for the "whooshes". If one of them sounds a little weak, maybe....

Also, you could look directly into the exhaust ports and inspect the apex seals... B)

That impact wrench idea is pretty good. Another way would be to just get a spare transmission and starter hooked up to it. With a TII transmission you could just use the bellhousing since it comes off.
