Recently i replaced my clutch (pressure plate, clutch plate, t/o bearing) after shattering the clutch plate. now (probably 2 months later) i'm getting a noise which sounds like a bearing.

U can hear it best when u are idling, not touching the clutch pedal... then if u push the clutch in, the noise slows down and stops. Its still noticeable when u are driving too, especially up near redline.

Any ideas? People can't decide if its T/O bearing or gearbox....

Its a S4 N/A, totally stock... so i woulda thought the box could handle just about anything i threw at it.

Cheers for any advice.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the same thing happened on my bosses truck. It's a 90% chance its the throwout bearing. He had the same thing after installing a new clutch. Some bearings are defective when shipped. His truck sounded like a helicopter. It was good for a laugh till the bearing blew.

Actually i'm hoping it IS the bearing.... its a $20 fix. Either way u have to drop the box i guess.

if it makes the noise in neutral and goes away when you step on the clutch, its the tranny. the t/o will make noise when you put you foot on the clutch

Dude your fine. My s5 TII makes the same noise and has done so for about 2 monthes now. It didn't make this noise until I did a clutch change and tranny swap. I believe it to be the tranny gear box. If I'm correct it is just the gears meshing in the gear box. I think it has something to do with the older trannies from the s4 because my s5 tranny never made this sound. It scared me at first but nothing has happened to it yet so I'm not worried about it. I really don't think you should worry either.

FYI: my s5 tranny had 116900 miles on it and was leaking fluid(reson for swap)
