Car makes a clunk noise when going from gas to braking or braking to power on.

Got it up on a rack and the u joints look good. U joints had very little free play. Can't tell if the noise is from the auto trans or the rear end.

Can this rear end be shimmed to take out slop? Some one told me on some diffs the pinion gear can be shimed closer to the ring gear to take out free play.

Any book number for how much the drive axle can turn back and forth with the wheels held tight? Mine turns plus minus about 1/8 " ( 1/4" total). Seems like alot. Thanks

yeah the diff mount(s) will go out and you will get a clunk from that, it's likely that is it.

All i gotta say is , you have an automatic. They tend to clunk alot when they are on they way out. Specially on and off throttle.

one of the unlucky few to get an auto. Just think, if you had a manual, chances are you wouldn't be having this problem.

I know the auto suks, but the car was a free gift from my mom. I was with her when she bought it new in 1986. One owner, literally driven by a little old lady for 17 years. 113k total miles.
