That "starting point" is an excuse to not put due diligence into tuning your car as well. "well, it runs well enough to drive" followed not too long after by "time for a new engine" and possibly "I hate standalones, one blew my engine."
The megasquirt is very well supported, there are plenty of people out there who will answer any questions. Theres a very detailed write-up on setting up and tuning a megasquirt, and the software is so easy to use that a little research and an afternoon or two will have you looking like you have a degree in engine management.
Dont make excuses for why you cant do it, without even knowing what it actually entails. You dont have to be a rocket scientist to do any of this. It just takes a little effort, and besides, learning to tune an EMS will teach you tons of information about how engines really work.
