What bad things will happen if I remove both cats on a 1988 TII? I'm getting a strange chemical smell from the exhaust (especially on hot start) which I believe is catalytic converter meltdown. It's definitely not a fuel/oil or anti-freeze smell. It almost smells like spray paint.

Nothing bad will happen.. ur boost can probably rise a few psi's but mechanically its safe... what u would need to do bang them till they're hollow in the inside and watch out because the crap inside can give u cancer.. or take it to a muffler shop and have them put a midpipe on but just remember when u do this, u CAN NOT pass emissions in any state.. and it will smell like rich fuel out the exhaust.. but in my opinion and probably most members of the forum.. its the best and easiest way to run these rotaries..

yes the dust created by the catalyst is carcinogic, and will cause cancer if inhaled.
