1: dampner is not a word (nor is dampener), dampen is, and damper is. Rob must be on the pipe again

It dampens the pulses in the fuel flow generated by the pump and the pressure drops caused by the injectors opening and closing... You would smell fuel if yours was leaking like the mazdatrix site documents... Your car might just be running rich, you might have leaky injectors (if they are still original send them off to be cleaned), and these cars always run rich from the factory.
You better check the pulsation damper though, there is a real fire hazard there.

it is mounted on the fuel rail...look for injectors by your air inlet tube into the throttle body....if that thing smells like gas or is dripping....stop what you are doing and replace it...your car will catch fire if the fuel dampener is broken..no joke

Hmmm... Damn, that blows. Well, there goes my exhaust money again. I'm gonna have to buy it from the dealership probably too, because I have to have my car. Oh well, it's just money. Anyways, would it be something that would be fairly easy to do in my garage with just standard tools, or should I take it in to get it done? Thanks again.

Wow, thats spendy, you could scrap the stock PD and the stock fpr and get an aftermarktet fpr, for about $20 more. That would work wouldn't it? Or you could uprgrade to an s5 rail and you don't have to worry about that.
