So I took for work this am. Drove about 3 miles. while getting on the freeway I noticed smoke from the rear of the car. Smoke stopped in about a mile. Checked temp. gauge was at 3/4. I got off the freeway and drove to where I could park it for the day. So I drove about two minutes at about 3/4 temp gauge. Is it going to be dead? It was running fine when I shut it off no noise or or abnormal running. Is that sure death for a rotary? I know they don't like excess heat, but was that not prolonged enough to cause real damage? Please help. I plan on replacing blown lower hose, getting it home and doing all cooling hose and engine bay fuel hoses.

3/4 shouldnt be bad, especially only for two minutes, with my t2 before i took it apart i forgot to turn on the e-fan more then once and overheated for a while before knowing, like fully overheated, when i took the motor apart the coolant seals were all a-ok.

Got it back together. Seems to run fine. The car only has 105k. I noticed a drip coming from what looks like the waterpump area directly under the T-stat housing. Not the T-stat gasket though. Is there a common source for a leak there? I still have to catch a ride out to my car to bring it home. As I fixed it were it was but had my truck too, so I left the RX. I will get the RX later tonight and check out leak with a mirror, after the drive home. I plan on hooking up the cooling system pressure tester tomorrow to the car to make sure combustion isn't getting in there. At least its still alive!!!!!!!!! I was worried, after reading how bad overheating the rotary was. To all that just got an RX, do yourself a favor and drop the 40-50 bucks and replace ALL cooling hoses. Seriously.

that leak might be the waterpump weep hole its designed to leak when the waterpump bearings are bad.

if the coolant seems to be dripping out from directly at the bottom of the WP pulley its the most likely culprit.
