short block is just the keg, no manifolds, accessories, nothing on it. A longblock is the whole engine, with all manifolds, accessories etc.

yes it a term used when the engine is outside the car, because its always a longblock when installed and running.

its kind of a piston engine term. a shortblock piston engine is just the bock, pistons and rods.

a long block is the short block with the cylinder head (s)
