Another cry for help

Yo.
My '87 Non-Turbo GXL surges when it idles, at times almost dying. It also acts like its underpowered when driven.
Anybody got any suggestions? Y'all seem to know what you're talking about, so have at it.
We bought it about 2-3 months ago from some used car guy. He said it ran alright, though I'm not sure how long it went without running. Ever since my father and I have had it, we've been trying to figure it out.
Oh, and just out of curiosity: does anyone know where I can decode my VIN, and find a list of the paint codes?

For the Paint Code go there, btw its located on the firewall in the engine bay right by the wiper motor
For the dying problems...1st thing I suggest is too do a tuneup on it, or/and you can try the ATF solution ( somewhere on this website I believe) and last, bring it to mazda and ask them to check your compression
