okay, so my AC doesn't work and i have tomorrow off, so i figure i can remove it, along with other dead weight such as the condensor and AC lines. since i have to remove the radiator to access this, i figure i might as well drain and replace the coolant along with the thermostat.



my question is: is the AC system listed in the FSM. i know my haynes will say something, i was just wondering about the FSM. also, can i discharge the freon, or do i need to have a pro do it? do i need to remove the PS pump to get off the compressor?

 

it might be in there, i dont remember. if it doent work it may not have any freon in it. i think you can tak out the compressor without touching the ps pump, you may have to loosen it, its a bitch either way

be careful when replacing the thermostat to not break the heads off either of the two bolts. And remember to put anti seize on them when reinstalling

 

waht is that? is that the thread tape or what?

 

rather than buy anti-seize @ $4.50 a bottle, check your medicine cabinet for some Mylanta, works the same way. Dip the bolt in and intall it. As far as the A/C is concerned Federal Law says you are not supposed to vent R-12 (freon) into the atmosphere. But unless you know of an EPA representitive living next door, don't sweat it. the easiest way is to crack open a fitting somewhere on the A/C system, what ever is easier, and crack it slightly, if you hear hissing let it slowly vent. may take a while, but do not breath the venting gasses. Don't open it wide open either, there is also oil in the A/C system and if let loose it will be everywhere.

 

well, i but a little packet of anti-seize for $.99, and i unscrewed the AC system charging port and pushed in the needle valve with some pliers. there was a little hiss, but nothing more, so that's done. now i just need some bigger wrenches to take this all apart
