Hoping for some advice on cleaning up my t2 project. I just put a JDM engine in my 89. The body is flawless but the 13b had no compression when i bought it. What I'm looking to do is make the engine bay simple and clean. I want to get rid of all the emissions and "rats nest" i think it's called. Looking for any advice on what I need to do that....go microtech or any sites that have instructions on what to do. I've seen many pics of rotarys and the only thing you see under the hood is the block a turbo and a few wires. My car is put back to stock as it sits now but doesn't want to stay running and i'm sure it's due to something electrical. Any advice would greatly help and I plan it to not be cheap but i want it done right.

thanks

Around here i'm not required to pass emissions. also i believe that since the car is 20 years old it doesn't have to pass either so i'm wide open as to how i can modify this car. Any thoughts?

I would make damn sure that you dont need to test emissions prior to modifying anything, and nail down what's really going on with the car, make it run right first.

Ive noticed from your past topics you've had issues with the car not holding idle or staying running, bad sensor(s) timing, etc. and I'm guessing they haven't been resolved yet? Modifying the car at this point will only confuse the issue in my opinion.

What engine codes are you getting?

Yes i've had issues and still am...It's winter here and the garage is cold. Will get back to it in the spring. Perhaps you are right and i should take care of running problems first...as far as what codes....that the thing i'm not getting any codes from how it's running. I was a honda tech for years and a code would make things much easier. The car kicks over starts for a second then dies it doesn't stay running like it did with previous issues. The air pump is not used as the exhaust on it has no port for it but the hoses are rerouted into the air box. Its hard to diagnose a problem in words and i'm still learning.... i will take advice as is given.

So we're all on the same page here:

89 turbo II,

A third party had a Series 4 Turbo II engine in the car when you got it?

Did it ever run then?

You yanked the S4 stuff, and repaced with JDM Series 5 TII goodies? all S5 parts, sensors, etc?

You extended the S5 ECU harness 3 ft? (I'm most apprensive of this portion)

It has started, actually came to life, but never idled or outright ran for any period of time?

Yes you are correct. They had an s4 with a bunch of wires and emissons poorly removed but no compression so i yanked it and put in a jdm s5 all sensors everything that came with it....nothing from the s4 i thought would work. Jdm is right hand drive as i'm sure you know so the harness went to drivers side. I'm looking to find a US harness cuz...yes....it's not the best way to do things but i wanted to have it run and get it going. It would idle but was very rough almost like a miss but smoothed out at higher rpms. Would only stay running with foot on the gas a bit.... I smoke tested the intake and found some leaks so i replaced the hoses with acutal mazda parts and rerouted some vacuum lines around the turbo to the way the diagrams show and now it will not stay running at all. Only people around here i know is the dealership but not sure they will even touch it in the condition its in

I would almost hold off on anything else until I had a proper ECU and harness combo that hadn't been molested, or you could step up and buy a standalone ECU and redo the engine harness yourself. I'm actually contemplating doing this myself.

The S4 stuff all should have worked too assuming the ECU and harness were matched to engine, but if the S5 ECU/harness was bastardized to try and run the S4 engine I'm guessing that would not work, nor would swapping parts between series'. If for some reason the S4 harness was molested, while missing certain parts of the emission system and or rats nest goodies (multi colored plugs), the engine light would never stop blinking "morse" error codes, check to see if the bulb has been removed.

The s4 harness was cut all to hell so i used wires from that to match colors and extend the s5 harness. The harness on the engine now came with the new engine also did the ecu. I will have to check the MIL and see if they took out the bulb....it wouldn't surprise me the way things have been done with this car. I'm not familiar with the stand alone ecu but eventually i'm pondering a programmable one and have it dyno tuned. Sounds like i should get a harness that is proper first and get it running. I definately appreciate the advice just hoping it's not a sensor that's bad i'm having trouble finding diagrams and diagnostic charts that are reliable.
