I was wodering what the differences between the 6 and 4 puck on ACT clutches are.

I like my clutches stiff but not overbearing, especially since it is an N/A.

My new FC is an 87 N/A with many mods.

(Soon to post some pics)

It is my understanding that a 4 is going to be a lot more harsh and than the 6 which is a lot more harsh than a stock disk. You can get a lot of power into a stock disk with a HD pressure plate though and you'll only get about 30% more pedal stiffness.

Dramon_Killer 02-15-2005 01:52 AM

If you're n/a you should be able to just do a s/s man. I can't see you putting down enough power to warrant a 4or 6 puck clutch.

RevRex-7 02-15-2005 11:17 PM

So what would you recommend?

act street strip.

In virtually any application I'd say go with a street disk. I think something to factor in is that if you ever went for a turbo swap that the NA tranny is going to fall apart and you'd want to upgrade to a turbo tranny most likely. That being said, If you went with somone like ACT, I'd suggest a street disk and a HD pressure plate. On the NA 225mm clutch you can handle 268 ft*lb of torque which is probably well over anything you're going to have to worry about. The XT plates can handle up to 350 ft*lbs. I'd suggest looking at some reviews on them and see what people have to say about their kits. I know pineapple racing gets some nice full disks that hold up better to abuse too. The biggest thing to consider is that six pucks are a little bit cheaper and have a lot more grab. This is a double edged sword though. The other thing to worry about is the higher the force of the pressure plate, the more force it's going to take from your foot. I think the HD plates are on the order fo 30% more force and the XTs are something like 70%. It just becomes a pain in stop and go traffic. -Zach-

Dramon_Killer 02-16-2005 12:00 AM

find a shop that will resurface the disk you have now with kevlar.

RevRex-7 02-16-2005 12:34 AM

Yes I was wondering about resurfacing the disc. That is a good idea.

Would this clutch be good? ACT Clutch

I also have a question about the shifter. It is very loose and moves about freely when in neutral. Let’s say I were to get a short throw type shifter, would it come with the necessary accessories to remove the free play? If so what shifter would be the best buy?

Thanks for your responses.

Maybe? Centerforce

I've heard mixed things about centerforce and I've heard mixed things about ACT for that matter. I've heard a bit of good things about ACTs from friends and my brother used one and then went to a centerforce and I think had a few complaints. I really don't have any experience with them myself though. I'm fairly happy with ACT at the moment.

i have a 4 puck, got the car with it... its a pretty stiff pedal but its like good feeling kinda like how you can feel the car more without power steering, it takes a little while to get used to the way you drive it but its cool...

SPD Racing FC 02-16-2005 05:47 PM

i run the centerforce DF clutch in mine over 300 passes and still going

FCmaniac 02-16-2005 09:31 PM

If you're talking about using the clutch for street use, the biggest thing IMO to consider is whether or not it has a sprung hub. Most unsprung hub clutches are meant for racing. I had an unsprung 4 puck disk (ACT) and it was a pain on the street.. extremely fast engagement. Some companies like Clutchnet make sprung hub six puck street/strip clutches which would be much better for street use.

Where would you recommend I get a sprung hub type clutch? That sounds more like something I would rather use.

Anybody recommend a short throw type shifter?

You're going to find that most full disk clutches will be this.

Best bang for the buck - I am running the turbo version of this:

Turbo

N/A

Their pressure plate design has remarkably light pedal pressure for such a high clamp clutch.

Also - adding an engine torque brace goes well with it.

I was wondering about these clutches. How is it holding up for you? How many miles have you put on it?

I installed that clutch 9 months ago, so it's too early to predict it's life.

From what I've observed hard launches & gear changes are no problem – it bites hard.

Soft slow easy starts are no problem – very gentile.

With medium quick starts it squeaks like it’s not happy.

And of course you want to rev match all up & down gear changes with any performance clutch.

How about that discount price on the turbo model?

FCmaniac 02-17-2005 06:59 PM

Yeah, the price is unbelieveable for these things.

teknics 02-19-2005 03:24 AM

i was running that XTD 6puck sprung disk and PP. It worked nice, bites hard but not too hard. It does like to squeak if you try slipping it tho.

kevin.

RevRex-7 02-22-2005 01:28 AM

Well I have decided to go stock replacement clutch with the HD pressure plate.

I would like to hear what others would recommend as far as short throw shifters.

Thanks.

you should look into racing beats clutches. I had a 6 puck unsprung clutch with a stock pressure plate on my AE and it worked really good. It took a little bit getting used to but it worked good. As for a short shifter im not a big fan of them. I had put one on my AE and it made a rattling sound that I didnt like. I heard it was a normal thing. and it sat way to low. it was uncomfortable.

CrassFC3S 02-22-2005 12:20 PM

do you have short freakish carnie arms?? haha well yeah theyre personal preference , do you know someone who might let you try theirs????
