LOL I've seen a recent updraft setup. http://www.camdensuperchargers.com/index.php?pag=403 Notice how the AF mixture from the DCOE/dellorto style TB has to go up before it enters the SC?

A carb hooked to the UIM would never work very well. Fuel has mass. No wonder the middle rotor got the most fuel.



I'll see about a return policy on the SC manifold. If it doesn't work very well either, I'll just bite the FI bullet.

I spoke with Gary, Atkins' SC guy, and he said the SC manifold costs about $425 or so (he didn't have the price sheet right in front of him). He also said it wouldn't work too well with a carb. He recommended a Mike Rotec. I told him about the Mega Squirt and he'd never heard of it. I guess I'll look more closely at the Mega Squirt's features and see if it'll be a good thing to get.



Another option would be to build my own manifold out of steel pipes. Mazdatrix sells flanges for this. http://www.mazdatrix.com/FABRICATORS.HTM I could get the steel one and try to build a compact intake manifold like the compact header I already built.



Mike, like you said, there just doesn't seem to be an easy solution here. Back to the drawing board.

I'm willing to give option 3 bit more thought.
I think I'll scratch option 3 as well because by the time it was all said and done, the cost of all that TIG welding would probably be the same as option 4, but with horrible AF mixture distribution. I noticed. Only the front and middle exhuast ports had any fresh carbon coating after removing the header. The rear looked as if it wasn't getting any gas. That's odd because all three leading plugs looked similar. Actually, the front plug looked like it had the most run time. The middle and rear looked identical, which is odd because the rear exhaust port looked like it did before the test run. In other words, I'm sorta stumped, but now think it's a bad idea to try to force an AF mixture through the upper manifold and expect it to be stoich on all three rotors. Scratch option 3.
Granted, the dellorto wasn't even functioning properly. If I were to have the UIM rotated 90º and welded to the LIM, with the Edelbrock on it (port matched to accept the carb's four barrels of course), how bad do you think the AF mixture would be to all three?



I'm going to start eyeballing it. I've got like 9 to 11.5 inches of hood clearance to work with.



Thinking about it some more, the primary runners were completely blocked during my test because the single primary port was blocked by the carb adaptor. Maybe having both primaries and secondaries flowing at the same time (like a typical V8 aftermarket manifold) would be ok? Or the primaries could be seperated from the secondaries. I can try it both ways I suppose.

It looks like the elbows of the UIM's runners are the same distance apart as the runners on the LIM before they seperate to their individual ports. I'm still not sure about hood clearance.

yeah sounds like the s/c manifold is the best solution here
You got that right! I checked out an Atkins SC manifold today and it looks like it'll work quite well.

I can't afford the SC manifold at this time. I'm still thinking about option 3.



I picked up some stuff that can 'solder' aluminum if you heat it up to 730ºF (shouldn't be hard with a propane torch). I'll get the engine in the car and then test fit/eyeball the manifolds to see if option 3 is even possible (to see if the carb will fit under the hood). Then I'll start cutting the manifold. I do have access to another 20B UIM and LIM with a TB, so I should be pretty safe if I screw up. I'd even be able to go FI if absolutely necessary (rotary god forbid).

Oh, we've messed around with the Alumi-Rite stuff, and it doesn't hold a torch (pun intended) to a TIG welder.



We've got that 20B NA running on a Haltech E6K, and it does an admirable job considering it thinks it's a 6-cylinder. Used E6K's should be very economical ($500 or so?) at this point, and it's just a matter of installing and getting everything tuned.



The only problem we're fighting is the inconsistent high RPM 6k+ misfire, which everybody thinks it's the MSD DIS-4 + stock trio of leading FC coils combo.



Other than that, it fires an idles like a stocker it's almost scary. I got to hear it the other day after coming back from Europe.
