When reconnecting the gear shifter shaft into the the Man Trans does the spring go to the right or the left side of the ball?

it goes to the more difficult side, i think the left.

Thats what I thought considering there is wear marks from the spring on the left side of the ball.

I had read somewhere that the spring should be on the right side, but after trying that for an hour it would not go that way.
