Depends, I had all new bearings and seals replaced in mine and it set me back 500 installed, and it still did not fix it. All my gears are good, however the transmission case is bad. What kind of problem are you having? I hope to have a set of gears and extras in the near future I can donate to the cause. (cause I love 7's). A rebuilt if you can get one will set you back around 1500 to 2500. per Mazda however they are no longer available from them and I could not find one anywhere. There is a place in Atanta that sells used transmissions for 500. If you can hold off awhile and I get mine back together could ship you my extras if they would help. Just cost you shipping...

Let's say the problem is just grinding 2nd and 3rd gears on a TII? Thanks

sounds like bad syncros...If the transmissions are the same I will have the gears you need...The Convertible 7 has a different ratio however the trans I am getting is for an coupe and I can use either gear set...Do you have a coupe or a vert../

Unless you're going to rebuild it yourself, it is not worth the $$. I had my tranny rebuilt, 3 months later it went out on me. Got it fixed. Now, a year and a half later it needs a rebuild, again. I said **** it, I'm just going to buy a used one for $200 - $300, if it goes out, no big deal. Oh, my rebuild cost me like $1500.

correct me if I am wrong...but in the racing beat book and other places I have read that a 2nd gen tranny is almost indestructable....except for the synchros.......

Don't know for sure but that is what I read....

breaking stuff and having them wear out are two different things

I'm not sure about the 2nd gen T2's but I have read that the 86-88 NA trannies were at there limit as far as power & weight handling for aggressive driving (anyone who actually drives a 7 like it should be driven). On my 86 NA, I had to get the tranny rebuilt at 85K due to the 2 & 3 synchros going bad. You could also hear the input shaft bearings rubbing when the clutch was out. After the rebuild, I ran it for another 20K with Redline MTL and several drag runs and it was great. I now have an 88 NA with 74K and I can tell it will be due for a rebuild within 10K and I do not beat on it all the time. Even when shifting at high RPM, I don't slam it into gear.... I heard the 89+ NA trannies are much stronger. Does anyone know if the 89+ tranny is a direct swap into the 86-88?? :frown:

I have a friend who had 3 trannies go on him.. but mine has 141k on it and it shifts very smooth, like its brand new.
