I have an 80 rx and it only has a four speed in it . At highway speeds its turning almost 4000rpms. I also have a trans out of a 86 but the shifter is back a little bit to far. Can I shortem the shifter housing and shaft? Anybody have any experience with this?

if your vin is sa22c - 606775 of higher you can put your shifter housing on the fc tranny

Yes I know it will bolt rite in but the shifter location was different on the 80 so I would have to cut my center trim up to make it fit. Thats something I don't want to do. j9fd3s I'll check my vin and see.

My vi is SA22C571215 so I guess I'm sol. Is there any way the shifter housing can be modified?

See with the sa22c - 606775 or higher, you get the housing and the shift rod off the old gearbox, exchange it with the fc gearbox (shift rod has to be shortened), cos the housings are interchangable. This saves the cutting out bit. Not too sure what you can do about the SA's though.

well the difference between the early 80 model and the 81-92, is the way the shifter rob ends mount, and the 79-80 rod ends wont go onto a later trany

Don't you have to cut the tranny tunnel back a bit too when your installing the FB tranny as well.I remember reading that before.
