I was wondering, the 1st gen RX7, the steering wheel column, is it coming apart or what, or is it made like that. It's has like an extension...??? Someone told me this is dangerous and it's a default in the steering column. I can I correct this.

The steering wheels are collapsible if thats what your asking. If it has collapsed, you have to get a new one.

 

theres a plastic pin that keeps it from collapsing, and i guess it easy to break. if you do try to fix it your self make sure that you put some thing in there that will also fail easily, you dont want to be skewered by the steering column if you crash

 

I had this problem with mine. Get some moulding from a plastic model kit, the round stuff that holds the actual parts together. Use it to replace the original plastic rivets.

I think if its a crash-safety issue, you should at least look into am alternative like getting one from a wreckers or seeing if mazda has the plastic part for sale separately.



It does depend on if your safety concious or cashed up though.

The guy at the Mazda parts counter didn't even know what I was talking about.



And it's a mile better than another suggestion I found; pop rivets.

 

yikes! Thats true. pop rivets are definetly a bad idea.



PS That plastic model stuff is called scrimmage.

 

Re the collapsible steering column, I have a basic question.



How does one determine if in fact the column has collapsed.



My steering wheel is able to be pulled forward, toward the driver, about 30mm, does this mean it has collapsed and if so can it be repaired in situ.
