Sorry to hear about your '79 Wooffinn...seems we have had a rather bad wave of luck here...found out the really really bad news today...4 different mechanics all did compression tests on my engine and here is what they all found out...

First of all one of my apex seals is totally destroyed...and the other 2 are either gone or in very bad shape...secondly the seals around the chamber...I am under the impression there are 2...anyway...one of them is totally destroyed...and the other is in bad shape too...first rotor however is in tip top shape...too bad really...

Mechanics quoted me 2000 to 2500 for a new engine installed...another 600 something for the weber carb system since my stock carb is due for the scrap heap...gonna be tight...but its better than buying some piece of crap car I don't want instead

I'll keep everybody updated on this whole thing if I can...supposed to get everything started in a few days with luck

Good luck man, I know how it feels. I have a '79 GS that I toasted the engine in with a rag (don't ask), and I didn't think I could scrape up the dough for a new engine, so I was just going to part 'er out. Turns out the guy I bought the car off of knew someone with a spare outta an '83 lying in his yard with relatively low k's on it. Picked it up for $250 canuck bucks (I'm evil), and she runs like a top.

Y not try to put the engine in yourself? Not that hard if you have a little bit of mechanical know-how, and a few tools... I did it myself (I'm 16) and it took me about 2 weeks the first time. Now I've done it 3 times (tryed doing a cheap re-build on the blown engine, but it didn't work) and the 3rd time took me about 4 hours all together.

Hope it all works out, and that I gave you a bit of encouragement.

Well...got kinda good news...work should start on my car in the next week or so...I'm heading down to the shop tomorrow to hand over 1500 bucks for a engine (ouch). They told me they didn't know if it was going to be a rebuilt engine or a kinda new engine yet...not sure where they get the engines from...but 1500 bucks is a pretty good deal

supposed to be about 2000 to 2500 for everything once its done...and I got a carb yesterday...stock but it has "gross jets" and some other mods...has about 500 miles on it I think and it was completly rebuilt...picked it up for 50 bucks plus shipping so I guess I'm back in business unless something else goes totally wrong.

I'll keep anyone interested posted...later

Good luck, I hope everything goes well. 1500 should get you a freshly rebuilt 12A ready to rock. Are you going to drop it in yourself or have someone else do it? Keep us posted man.

well...it cost a taaaad more than I thought...1500 was the down payment...turns out it costs 2200 for the engine...plus labor for them to install it...not sure who reworked it but its coming out of washington somewhere...with a 2 year waranty...I'm going to try to find out some more tomorrow when I call...

If its coming out of Wa. its probably an Atkinsrotary motor. I have been to their shop before and they are nice people. Your engine should run good. I believe they use all new housings on their rebuilds so you should have excellent compression. Good luck!

The shop couldn't find a motor so we ended up calling mazda recycling...they cut me a deal for 1300...they are probably building it as I'm typing this...supposed to have it compression tested and out of the shop by monday on the way to the mechanics...guess it pays to check around

Oh...and I got a cd in the mail today about the rx-8...*drool*...anyone know if it would be very easy to someday put a renesis into my car to bring it up to date on fuel economy and such?

and of course I'll probably have to get a rx-8 too...but u still gotta love the 7
