my 85's door panels at the top sucked so i tried painting the metal with plasti-kote and it doesn't look bad at all. i just have to put some molding on to cover the staples

Looks OK - time will tell as for how it holds up.

If you want to refinish vinyl, the best product I have ever seen is called "Vinyl Kote" - it's a dye rather than paint that actually penetrates the vinyl. Won't crack, peal, chip, or fade. Expensive but worth it (about $100/quart) - see my car for a look at the balck application on burgandy
