first off hello iam new here i have a 81 gsl rx7. i bought it for 1200 with 70,000 mi. has been running good but the other day i went on a short trip to the store and when i hopped back in the car it wouldnt start. it was like i was out of fuel so i pushed it to the pump put some in and after a little cranking it fired up and off i went happened again so i was checking the fuel pump and it was running but wouldnt suck up any fuel i had in a gas can, and really sounded week. opened it up and was full of black soot. its a mallory comp pump part #4070 anyone have this problem? they sell rebuild kits for 45 bucks. should i try to rebuild?

Have you replaced the fuel filter

 

You could try rebuilding it if you think the pump motor and hard parts are in good condition. For 45 bucks though, I'd look at buying a whole new pump. Rockauto lists a couple choices for that money.

Edit: I just looked up that pump number. Looks like a high flow unit that probably pushes more fuel at a higher pressure than you need if you're running a 12A in stock form. I'd be looking at a stock replacement pump.

Also, if the current pump is gunked up, you might want to check out what's in your fuel tank. If there's a bunch of junk in there, it will foul the new pump too. Make sure you've got a good filter between the tank and the pump.
