I replaced my starter today...got a rebuilt with lifetime from oreilys...with the solenoid or whatever it is that goes with it...anyway...I installed it and hooked EVERYTHING up...double check and triple checked...tightened everything down very good
I turn the key and...nothing
with the old starter I would beat on it and it would start...then it would go back to nothing randomly
I even replaced the switch in the column
battery cables are on the battery posts very tight...and the battery is charged...
we even tried using a jumper on the battery...still nothing at all
volts do move on the guage when I try to crank tho...so I guess power is being diverted to the starter
it's just not making it somehow
It's been a month now without my car...and I have spent way over 200 bucks on parts
I'm completely lost as to what the problem might be?
any ideas?

Sounds like the problem I was having except my positive cable came loose and that was the problem that gave me many headaches.Make sure you're getting power to the starter from the positive wire then with the ignition to ON make sure there is 12V on the remote power wire.

I hooked up the larger cable coming down in the exact place the old one was...it had a little groove for the metal piece to fit...then there was a wire that connected to another wire with a clip...and then the final wire that fits onto a clip post on the starter
perhaps I should get out a tester
I think we may have one somewhere
if nothing else its going back to the guy that put the engine in my car....I have had more problems since I got it back from him than I have ever had
clutch and brake master cylinders both leak and they never did before
my car is very hard to start...until its TOTALLY warm it won't run without the choke...and even with the choke it goes vrrm...vrrm...vrrrm...jumping about 500 rpm back and forth
also had a bad water pump...which he did not tell me about
nor did he tell me that my cruise didn't work anymore...it worked perfect before he put the new engine in
just a crapload of problems

Well, your new starter could be bad. I would recheck everything again (even though you already have like a zillion times, but you never know ), then you could pull the starter out and bench test it. They can test it down at your local auto parts or battery store.

i know its a pain in the butt when something like this happens recheck all your starter wires check your fuse wires on the strut tower and it could be a bad starter your cruise is probably not hooked up if he had the motor out good luck

Dont feel bad man, i drove my '83 for one day, its been close to a month now and i still dont know whats wrong with it. but yeah like these guys said, check all of you connections, mine did the same, till i found loose wires, missing wires, and sometimes burnt wires, owner before me didnt know **** about cars in general, and dont ever let someone else work on your car. a limited amount of ppl know anything about a rotory, and not many of them are your local mechanics.

Hey Falcon, easiest on car check is if you have a test light, quickly check you're main cable for voltage. then disconnect your small wire[at the solenoid] and put the test light probe in the terminal. if it's working correctly, when you turn your key to the start position[you'll need a assistant], your test light should light. If not there's a fault in this wiring system. Mazda factory terminals[those shitty little clear coated ones!!!] will wear with age so even connected can sometimes loose contact.Give it a wiggle to see in the start position.[Just be careful though] I've had a few new starter motors in the shop that haven't worked so it could be faulty. As for those other problems, I'd go back and not be very nice about it. It seems unfortunately that my fellow mechanics let me down all over the planet!
