How much return to center should be present in my 85 GS manual steering? I know it should have pretty good resistance to turning but it seems that there is ALOT of return to center steering force when I am near one end or the other. Is this normal? Do I have an alignment problem?

yeah thats normal. its basically due to the inclination of the struts, this helps stability at high speeds

Im glad you guys are on steering. I put a new bushing in today to get the play out and it did take all the play out of the steering linkage but now I can feel the 4 in. of play in the gear box. How can I adjust this out, Isnt there a **** on top of the box?
