For how old they are I could almost guarantee they need to be replaced...
I had a 79 12A that did just what your discribing. The oil seals were old and leaky. they got to the point that one morning I fired it up and the landlord came running over to the house because he thhought the house might of cought on fire!
It started eating oil and foullng plugs. Then it just started blowing smoke all the time. So I pulled it and got a JDM S5 13B Turbo to put in it's place.

hmmm well it only seems to do it when its cold. it has trouble starting if i leave it when the engine is cold, for example, by the time ive paid for petrol and got back in the car i have trouble firing it up again. the smoke only occurs when i leave for work at 5:30am. i wont bother replacing the seals, im trying to sell the car at the moment to get something cheaper. being a uni student sucks financially.

are you sure your engine is cold when you just stop for fuel? perhaps your hot start assist is disconnected or the motor does not work. also the smoke only occurring in the morning sounds like condensation left in your exhaust over night. good luck
