Thumbs up

I got my car running today but it will only start at full throttle, and at 2000 it sputters and won't idle. I'm thinking timing any ideas?

As I twist the distributor twards the right clockwise it sounded better. So I guess the next step is to remove the front pulley, mark it and set the timing.

You may want to set the timing the way I did.

Look here: Thread on setting timing. It might help.

I just baught the timing light today from sears. Let me get this strait allI have to do is set the dial to half the total advance I'm seeking at 4000rpm's aim the light and adjust as needed? Sounds almost to easy. And keep 8 degree split but useing the same line on the pully.

Which would be 4* on a timing light that doesn't have a 2-stroke switch.

Raul

Ps just remember to use the 0* mark and not the 20*ATDC mark. (I saw a guy do

that, it was funny )

Cool this all sounds good I'm going out to try it now. I'm going to go with 20 degrees tatal advance so I guess I'll set the dial at 10? I'll let you know.

Well I've come to the conclusion that this ignition ******* sucks. I wired it perfectly checking and double checking the wires over and over again. When I tried to time it I put a wedge in the throttle to bring it up to 4000rpm and the mark was way off. I then set the dial at 10 so I would end up with 20 degrees total advance timing. The only way the lines would line up is if i retarded the timing that would only bring it close but not right on. As far as the trailing the vacume port does not move far enough to help any. when I got it so it sounded ok and it idled ok I went to tighten the distributor and all ignition was lost. none of the igniters work. I touched the wrench from the pickup of the timing light to the aluminum plate maybe thats what happend I don't know. I'm going junk yard hunting for the original equiptment. I know where ther is three 1980 rex's with complete ignitions. I need this car running yesterday!

Ok now that I've calmed down just a few questions? Can the coil packs on a genII be used I have a couple of them. Or can any coil pack from any car be used my freind owms a junk yard. And what are these smart igniters I've heard about?

Geez, I'd never buy a timing light with a dial on it. Maybe that's your whole problem? Just kidding. I know the ignition works on pre RX-7 rotaries, but I've never personally tried to convert an RX-7. Others have though, with great results. Somebody on a different forum was going to do a proper write-up for the 1st gen, so that would be your best bet. I think it was over at Mazspeed perhaps?
