If you're dropping a 2nd gen (or 3rd gen) motor into a first gen, then yes, a 12A distributor is a drop-in ignition. The cool thing is that it's self-contained, meaning you don't need any computers to run it. If you're putting it into a second gen (this is the first gen section, so I'm figuring you're not) then you have to put in an ignition system that plays nice with the stock computer or go with some custom electronics.

As far as current loss, I assume you mean is there any loss of ignition power. The stock 1st gen ignitions are weak, but by adding in an MSD box (or a third ignitor) and a better coil (2 MSD Blaster coils or two-pole 2nd gen coils are popular) you can vastly improve your spark. There's a good write-up at http://www.mazspeed.com/msd.htm. Personally I like the single MSD box running the leading ignition through a 2nd gen coil.
