So, including the one that was on it when I started driving it last January, 4 alternators have died in my car. This time I noticed the voltmeter reading low soon after a high RPM acceleration. Is the heat, the RPM's or booth that are destroying the internal regulator? This is driving me nuts. I cannot afford a $700 super rebuild, so is there a solution? Maybe a high output 130 from another manufacturer, a retrofit in other words? Is there one rated for 6k and up RPM for a budget limited individual like myself. I realize the car is 27 years old, but something HAS to work. Maybe a custom wind at a local alternator shop, and/or a heavy duty regulator?,,,BB

my 81 kept eating alternators. redo the big + wire from alt to battery. get new battery cables. add grounds from - bat to chassis and - bat to engine. get a new battery and trickle charge it for 2 days, then install a new alternator. no sense having a new alternator burn out trying to charge a battery that is discharged and tired. search for shorts and fix them.
after i did that routine everything was in spec and the alt lasted a lot longer.
i would install a higher amperage alternator as stock is barely ok for stock electronics. 3rd gen rx7 is fantastic just needs a pully from a dodge caravan to work with your belts. i have that on my 74 REPU and it puts out 15 volts all day.
