Just so you know, the bellhousing and the front half of the transmission case are one piece. Like most Japanese transmissions of the era (that I've seen) there is a center plate with the mainshaft bearing, rear countershaft bearing, and shift rods. The front case/bellhousing dowels onto the front, and (IIRC) the tailhousing bolts go through the back case and center plate to the front case.
The front case/belhousing of the transmission holds the input bearing and the front countershaft bearing. There should be some resistance as you pull the front case off because of the tight fit of the bearing races. Just be patient and watchful. A rubber mallet also helps.
I wish I had pictures... I have a lamp in my garage that uses a bellhousing/front case as a base.
