I need to know what are potential canidates for a LSD or Posi swap in a 1st gen 7 84-85 model ONLY.

Im interested in the Miata Torsen LSD but have heard if your tire looses contact with the road it basically turns into an open differential. I like the idea of having a 84-85 GSL or -SE direct drop in but dont like the fact its 20 years old.

Lets hear what you guys think or have heard about gear swaps, thanks!

for just the diff you have 4 choices.

1. open diff

2. 84-88 clutch type diff, these are easily rebuildable, you can buy the clutches and pack it tighter, or looser as you like

3. 89-90 viscous lsd, its only found in the 89-90 gtus, so not only does it suck, but its rare too.

4. 94-05 miata torsen diff.

You are the man, I was told you could use diffs from a Kia Sportage using a 4.88 to 1 R&P and a Mazda B2600, I cant remember the gear on that one. Im kinda leaning towards the Torsen from the Miata, mainly for availability of replacement parts but I didnt know that 86-88 2nd gens had diffs that would fit the 84-85 rear end. A bit of good info for the junkyard trips.

Here's a question, When I was working at Mazda in parts I looked in the catalog for 79-85 RX-7 parts and didnt find any. The parts manager said it was the latest update they had for the computer and Mazda didnt stock parts for first gens anymore. I talked to a guy that says he can get parts from his local dealership no prob, does my dealership just suck or is he full of ****?

You can also fit a front diff or center section from a

1987-1992 B2600 4x4 which is 4.44

1992-1998 Kia Sportage 4x4 which is 4.88

1994-1999 mazda miata diff which is 4.30

if you dint mind going up in ratio you can have more selections to chose from and can probably get them cheaper aswell ..

you can get lots of stuff for 1st gens still, the old epc did everything 86-03, so everything older was still on microfische. the new epc does almost everything from 77-now
