81 rx-7 running choppy

I have a 1981 rx-7 and it started running choppy all in the sudden. It feels like you pulled a spark plug wire off a four cylinder engine and were driving it. It runs choppy through all rpm's.

I checked both coils, spark, and changed all the spark plugs. The U1 looks a little weak don't think thats enough to make it run this bad.

It barley has any power and sounds like crap. I used carb cleaner in the carb, but don't think it's that.

I have only had the car for about two weeks and don't know much about rotary engine's.

Please help

first thing you need to do is eliminate worst case senario, check compression, you can get an idea simply be pulling one spark plug from each chamber, disconnect ignition (pull slider wires off both ignition coils) have someone crank the car while you feel the compression puffs from the engine. you are expecting fairly strong but more important cosistant puffs from both sides, what you do not want is any inconsistancies from chamber to chamber or in one chamber. You want three strong equal puffs from each chamber

If it seems good or not call me and i can help you get to the bottom of it and discuss options

Thanks for the info on the compression check. The front rotar is bad for sure. So now I need to figure out how to rebuild the rotar. Is it best to replace both at once or just deal with the broke one? My two weeks of no pistons has come to an abrupt ending.

So, you did a compression check then? Or are you guessing?



Judging by your question, it sounds like you don't know much about the internals of the rotary. It might be best if you find a used engine to swap in, or have a shop rebuild it for you. If you feel like you can handle it, check out the rotary building and porting section. There's also the factory service manual online somewhere, there are also rebuild instruction videos available, and even the Haynes manual in stores shows how to rebuild the engine.

Thanks I'll check around. I would like to find one that is a little hopped up. No use in putting a stock one back in.
