we have been trying to find the problem with our 1982 Rx-7 for awhile now. the problem began when it starting dying at stop signs. it would start up again and die again when you came to stop. I adjusted idle skrew and made it idle ok. Soon after that the top speed was about 45 mph. we have checked many things and conclude it is carburetor problems for now. this is the original carb. my question is, is this a common symptom of something wrong with the carb. Compression has been tested, all hoses going to the carb are ok and don't find leaks. Carb cleaner and seafoam spray has been used to try to clean up the carb. The car sat for a few years, then got it going and it ran great for about 5000 miles before the trouble began. Thank you in advance for your expertise. Some have suggested it is the shutter valve. It has 150K miles. THanks. sjh

you can get a carb rebuild kit from www.blackdragonauto.com for like $20

I fix the sutter valve by removing it along with ALL the other emissions crap, But I dont have to pass the smog tester...

have you replaced your fuel filter? also a clogged cat could cause this problem. with a clogged cat the car could rev fine in neutral, but under load would put a major damper on power.

if that isnt it try pulling the main jets and cleaning them then spray carb cleaner where they go and make sure it comes out in the primarys with a good flow. i had the same problem with the 45MPH top speed and doing this took care of it.

The main item to check with the carburetor are the fuel level in the windows, should be about half or a little more. Also check to make sure the carburetor is not flooding over. Also if it responds to adjustment and the above look OK it may not be the carburetor. I would specifically check the anti-afterburn hose which is on the passenger rear corner of the carburetor and goes to a nipple on the back of the intake manifold. Also check to see if your timing advances when your rev it up. Yes clogged exhaust could be the issue. Also make sure your secondaries will manually open.
