On my 83 GSL motor (12A carbed, all stock) the top plugs are not firing. Do these go at a cretain RPM, or should they be firing with the bottom plugs?

This all stared when the tack was not working, so I traced the problem to the forward coil. I could get a pulse off the back coil so I thought the forward coil was bad. I replaced it with a brand new one, but I still have no tack, and no pulse reading on the Ohm meter. I also can take off the top plugs and start the car and its not getting any spark off them.

I have the Haynes manual and it states something about the igniter box could be a problem to. The funning thing is that I noticed is that the car actually did run a little better after changing the coil to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately that was just your imagination playing tricks on you. If your tach is'nt working at all, or is bouncing all over the place, this is the result of a craped out ignitor.

Hate to admit this, but I can't remember which one on thew dizzy is the trailing (mine are wired up kida funky).

These little guys are expensive! Try taking them both off (Carefully!) and cleaning the contacts with 600 sand paper.

If that does'nt work, you'll need to get another one.

The leading and trailing ignitors are the same.

BTW, switching em' won't do ya any good if it's cooked. The bottom plugs are the leading ones, and the car won't run at all without those going.

Clean up all the connections on the coils, ect. Don't want to cook another one of those babys!

Go to a junkyard and make sure there's no cameras. Get something else you need, and scap an ignitor.

Thanks Sterling!

I went to the "Pull A Part" Junk yard today and luckily they had a not so striped 82 GSL with a full motor! I jacked those two ignitors ($209 a piece at the auto store new) and a few other parts and was charged $8.10 for everything!

I replaced both of mine with the "used" ones, check the plugs and FULL spark!

Took the car out on a test run around the block and it was rippin all the way, plus my tack was working!

Thanks again for the help, it completely fixed my problem! :thumbs-up:

The leading igniter is the one to the front of the engine, the one facing the carb is the trailing. Your haynes manual has a description of how to check your igniter. I suggest going to a local wreker and buying a spare distributor or putting a few igniters in your pocket.
