OK guys, I have a decision I need to make on where I would like my career here working for OC welfare to go. I don't mind posting what I make, since it isn't much. Raises might be somewhat meager compared to a lot of what's out there, but I do have a bit more security than most jobs.

Here's the prob: I currently make $16.49/hr ($2858.71/mo). At the end of Jan, it will be raised to $17.93/hr ($3108.35/mo) IF I stay at my present title. This jobs caps out at $19.42/hr ($3281.71/mo). I will reach this mark 1 "raise" after this upcoming one (basically in Jan 2005). Bascially each raise would be ~$1.50/hr, once per year. I have no one below me. I am basically a grunt worker.

Job opportunity #1: Office Supervisor C (out of A, B, C, & D). If I get this, I would get a 5% increase from my current pay ($16.49/hr) and be placed in the closest payscale slot. This job caps out at $21.30/hr ($3692.57/mo), which I would reach in 3-4 years from the time I begin. Each raise would be ~$1.00 - $1.20 depending on the supervisor I'd be under.

Job oportunity #2: CalWORKS worker. This is basically a higher, more complicated version of what I am now. This job caps @ $21.77/hr ($3774.05/mo). I would get the disctrict standard 5% promotion raise same as Job Opp. #1. Raises would be anywhere from $1 - $1.65/hr, depending on the supervisor I would be assigned under. This would also take 3-4 years from the month I begin.

Dilemna: The Office Supervisor position looks great on the resume. I would be in charge of 7-10 office techs, have an office rather than cubicle, etc. I would be a lower member of the "elite" in this building. There are ~200+ employees here, and only ~ 20 - 30 first-line supervisors (I won't go into 2nd or 3rd line). supervisor). The problem with Job Opp #1 is that it pays a hair less than, and raises are harder than that of Job Opp #2. By the end of 3-4 years, I would make $.40 less per hr in Job Opp #1 than Job Opp #2, disregarding the yearly 3-7% cost of living adj's (which I get now as well). To further compound the prob, my current supervisor is REALLY nice. I'm pretty much guaranteed $1.50/hr/yr raise (higher than the 5% promotion raise). This just doesn't have much room for improvement.

What should I do?

I know this is all very confusing, so post any Q's there may be.

honestly i would go for the supervisor position regardless if you plan to stay in the welfare department and make a nice career out of it or if you are gonna be looking for another job in the later years. but you also have to look at how much responsabilty you are willing to take on. do u wanna have work on your mind when you go home? (like i do) **** like that will make a big difference.

I'd go for the supervisor. That way, you can be the guy giving everyone buck fifty raise and they'll think you're awesome. Furthermore, I'd think most people would like to climb up to the very top of a company... that's if it happens... going to this supervisor position is definately a step up than being a grunt worker.

All in all, comparing job security, I'd think all three options would be about the same. If they have to cut back, they'd fire the supervisor first though... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Ryan,

The main prob between these two isn't really about the stress involved. Both should be somewhat higher than what I deal with right now, but i don't think it's anything i can't get used to.

The decision I need to make is whether to go for the position that gives a better title (office supervisor) or slightly better pay (CalWORKS worker).

To be honest, neither makes much $$ :(

I plan on going back to school within 5 yrs, but I haven't decided on what subject to pursue. Most likely the worker position would look better on College apps, but the supervisor position would look better on resumes.

well if thats the case of you going back to school within 5 years. take the job with less work involved. you do not wanna overwork yourself and go to scholl at the same time. with a higher job title comes a lot more stress. hell i should now.

either one you pick though will be a better move for you in the long run. btw are they both salary or hourly? that would make a huge difference on my out look of the situation

r0t0r-rooter 10-27-2003 01:31 PM

They are both hourly.

I'm *planning* on going back to school, but I haven't realy thought much about it beyond that. I don't know where I want to go, how i'm going to afford it, how to schedule work around it, etc. I haven't even started preparing for the GRE yet. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif

well i would take the higher paying job then. less stress w/ more money. you can always put on your resume that you were a office supervisor https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

Even if I don't take the job?

Turbo II 10-27-2003 01:43 PM

yup. companies hiring barely call and ask what your position was, they just wanna verify employment and salary thats about it.

r0t0r-rooter 10-27-2003 04:42 PM

OK, I just applied to job #2, will be talking to the supervisor in charge of hiring for job #1, & sent in my resume for a new job #3.

#3 is to be a Human Resources consultant for OC; starts @ $22.23/hr and up DOE. I prob won't get it, but might as well try. Hopefully I get this, get some decent experience going, & then get my ass hired @ Mazda, Nissan, or Toyota's HR dept https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png
