Ok, so today was pretty nice out, and i felt takin the fd out for a spin. I bought some 'new' stock 3rd gen wheels off of the other forum a couple weeks ago, and I never got around to getting new tires mounted on them. So I dropped them off at a local tire shop and they mounted some new rubber for me. I get back to my car, and start taking the old wheels off. Go pick up the new wheels, and the rear two go on just like normal. and then i get up to the front and start loosening the lugs, and i get to the 'security' lug, grab the adapter, start loosening it, or trying to anyway. it seems that fucker was on there to stay, and the grooved part in the adapter socket broke off. so now i have 2 new tires on the back and two nice wheels with new rubber sitting in my damn garage waiting to be put on. The pic should explain it a little better.

Oh, and don't worry, this isn't like ricer-ville, i have stock 3rd gen wheels all around, nothing stupid like aftermarket wheels on the rear and stockers on the front. so no flames please :bigthumg:

damn, can't upload pics, anyone want to host for me?

whatever company makes the wheel lock you should be able to contract them and get a new key made. usually they just need a number off of the key but you can also send them the broken piece just to be sure. I'd contract them first. If all else fails you can use the tried and true method of hammering an old socket on over the wheel lock and taking it off that way.

You can just buy a deal from snap on that will spin off any locking lug, I have one, they are about $50.00, but well worth it.

u can host on nopistons.net for the while its still up. just pm and admin to set u up with a folder

JimmyJimboJet 12-02-2002 06:32 PM

phinsup, do know the part # for that? i checked out snap-on's website and i couldn't find anything.

Cheers! 12-03-2002 12:33 AM

Jimmy,

on the actual security key, there is a serial number... that number is what you need to tell the company who made the lock lug nuts... the company should also be printed on the key as well

phinsup 12-03-2002 12:41 AM

Hmm, I will have to see if I can find a part number on it, I bought it about 2 years ago so I dunno if there is still a part number on it or not, I'll let you know.

So not all FD wheel locks are the same key? Cause if they're the same, you could just buy/borrow a key off a wrecked 7 or something...

i was also wondering about that. I was actually at a mazda dealership about a month ago in the parts department, and they had a few of the anti-theft lug sets there, and i thought to myself 'hmm, maybe i should get one, just incase'

and whattya know, i need one.

i couldn't find a number or any other kind of markings on it. looks like i'm just gonna have to hammer a socket on it and pick up a new set of lugs.

You're gonna hammer a socket on each lock? Sounds like a terrible waste of 4 sockets. Oh well, go out and buy some Gorilla or SplineDrive locks when you're all done. They're pretty freakin nice.

Sinful7 12-04-2002 08:14 PM

can you JB weld the lock pattern back into the socket? is that what I see in the pic? It only has to work once, after all.

EDIT: Sorry for whoring, I'm not quite all there today.

JimmyJimboJet 12-04-2002 11:04 PM

i still have yet to call a dealer and ask them about it. if worse comes to worse i'm just gonna have to hammer some sockets on.

hopefully the pattern on the lock is universal.

i actually thought about taking it to a machine shop to see if they could come up with something. who knows though, i'll try the jb weld first. and yes you are correct, that is what you see. the pattern has little 'teeth' (kinda like a gear), and the socket has 'receptive' teeth, i guess to keep the pattern joined to the socket while turning. i tried taking a pic of it but it wouldn't turn out very well.

Sinful7 12-05-2002 09:41 AM

I get it now. I just didn't know how the key as in the lock-socket. How stripped are the teeth on the backside of the lock pattern? 'cause it looks as if the teeth on the socket are okay.

JimmyJimboJet 12-05-2002 06:23 PM

it doesn't look like the teeth are stripped at all. a couple teeth on the socket are a little stripped. right after it broke, i put the pattern back in the socket and tried it again, but the teeth weren't catching. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

Silver Ninety Three 12-05-2002 06:28 PM

I hate the cheep wheel locks that come with cars. I've stripped them may times. If you're going to hammer a sockets on just go and buy some cheep sockets. Don't use expensive ones like craftsman. This method works pretty well. I don't sue wheel locks anymore. After all, who steals stock wheels?

Sinful7 12-05-2002 07:01 PM

yeah, what he said!!!

No, really.. I'm just thinking that with some really strong Epoxy, and most of the teeth left on both pieces, there's no reason that you shouldn't be able to hold the pieces together long enough to get the locks off.

Afterall, you're only applying what, like 70 ft-lbs? Anyway, my point is that the key doesn't have to last.

djgiantrobot 12-06-2002 03:48 PM

if you do get the craftsman, when they split down the side you can take them back and get new ones!
